The two-time defending champion of the Golden Cup, the United States team is currently unbeaten in the tournament and heading into the quarterfinals after defeating Honduras on Wednesday night 2-0; they still have to beat Haiti on Saturday to have a secure spot in the quarterfinals.
The game that was scoreless until minute 75, when Santino Quaranta opened the score when he took a pass from Charlie Davis at the beginning of the penalty zone to fire a good shot and score the first goal for the Americans. This was the first appearance of Quaranta with the United States team in more than three years. "I looked to my left and saw Santino making a good run, so I was able to lay off a good ball for him," Davies said. "He was just like, 'Thanks.' I think it was gratifying for him to score in front of the home crowd." Santino admitted publicly that he had problems with drugs and alcohol before asking for a new opportunity with the DC United, the team with whom he started his professional career back in 2001.
His road for recovery has been difficult, but conducted him all the way to the national team squad, and he has stated that he is very excited with the opportunity that has been given to him. Honduras had a great opportunity of scoring at minute 30' when Walter Martinez broke away and it was just him against the US goalkeeper, but he shoot the ball too wide and it just passed by the goal arc and hit the net in the left side.
The roster of the United States team for this tournament is completely different from the one they had in Confederations Cup last month since most of the players were given a recess before they enter into the last part of the qualifying rounds for the World Cup of next year. Coach Bob Bradley is trying to see if he has to make some more changes for the squad to be more solid since most of the players that went to the Confederations Cup are not playing.
The first ones on giving a breath of fresh air to the offense were the veterans Charlie Davies and Benny Feilhaber, and some other changes that he made in the other games they have been playing. The game against Haiti will be another test to see if he needs to make more changes in the team.
